Are you surprised that -n might become -ṃs? This strange change has a reasonable explanation. Many of the Sanskrit words that end in -n originally ended in -ns. After we reduce consonants, only -n remains. But if certain unvoiced sounds follow, we keep that -s sound. Then the -s changes accordingto normal sandhi rules.
